TP-Link AD7200 Wireless Wi-Fi Tri-Band Gigabit Router

I am not an expert, but this router was easy to set up and works great. I don’t have any device that has the WiFi AD built in so this review is just on the WiFi AC in the router on the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. The WiFi AD runs on 60 GHz band.

It’s probably overkill for my uses but the price was right. Would love to see some TVs with WiFi AD built in soon.

Before this I had a Linksys E3000 N router and I would average between 40 and 60 Mbps down and 20 Mbps up. Now I easily get 90 to 105 Mbps down and 20 to 25 Mbps up.

It’s made a big difference. Had all the family over for the Thanksgiving holiday and everyone had great speeds on their devices with no deadzones and signal drops. We had around 25 devices connected all at once during the holiday period

No lags or slow downs while streaming movies. I’m impressed.

ASUS AC3100 WiFi Dual-band Gigabit Wireless Router

The Asus RT-N66U is absolutely an impressive piece of hardware. Seriously powerful, feature packed, aesthetically pleasing, and at an approachable price point for the hobbyist. I think you’ll find that this holds true by reading all the great reviews here.

There are definitely two weak points to be aware of, however.

The first – the firmware that it ships with is in pretty rough shape.

After unboxing and plugging in my router I went through the setup wizard to change the SSID, change the router password, and set up WPA2 key. This went fine. After that, I went in to the router settings and made one small change, saved it, and was disconnected from the router as part of the change. It should have reconnected shortly after, but instead my browser presented me the page that comes up when a web address cannot be reached. I tried for a while but the router was suddenly inaccessible on the default IP address. Basically, from what I could tell, the change I made however benign had buggered up the router. I ended up resorting to a reset – accomplished by holding the reset button for 5-10 seconds with the router turned on.

So lesson #1 here is to immediately install the newest firmware available at the Asus website THE MOMENT you unbox your and plug in your router. The firmware update went smoothly after I got the router reset to factory setup and working again, and now it’s been working flawlessly for a month.

OK, second weak point – the router, as far as I’m concerned, comes from the factory improperly configured. That is, the default settings in the router hamper its full and proper operation.

What I mean by this is that after installing the router I was getting less than ideal performance out of it. While it was working well enough to give me good download and upload speeds (25mb/sec down, 15mb/sec up) from my cable connection, internal network speeds and coverage were below expectations. For example, paired with a matching dual band NetGear USB wireless adapter on my office computer, Windows wireless client was showing network speed fluctuating between 78Mbps and 216Mbps with it usually in the middle somewhere around 120Mbps. Better than the approx 50Mbps speeds I would see with my 802.11g router and adapter previously but not what I’d expected. In addition, the signal strength was rather poor in the back room. As another example, I was getting a consistent 144Mbps from my XPS M1530 laptop, with an older single band 2.4Ghz draft-N internal card, in the living room right near the router. Also less than my hopes had been for this router.

So I did some more thorough review of the wireless settings and found two big issues that needed to be change to get this router working as it should be.

The first was that the wireless control channel setting for both the 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz bands is set to “Auto” be default. Ideally, this would mean that the router would dynamically select the best channel based on local interference in that band. In the real world, though, this Auto mode on most routers doesn’t work that well and this is no different. I performed a wireless network scan with my Android phone using a free app, and found that my router was camped out on Channel 6. As some may know, this is the default channel for most consumer routers and most home users never change away from it. Sure enough, there were three other wireless networks that I could detect around neighborhood that were on channel 6 as well. To remedy this, I took the 2.4Ghz band off of Auto and set the channel to 1. For those making this change themselves, be sure to scan using something like WiEye on your phone or inSSIDer on your computer. Assuming that most of the other routers in your area will be using channel 6, you will need to move yours to the far ends of the channel list, choosing either 1 or 11. This because the signal from the routers set to channel 6 do not stay there perfectly, instead they overlap substantially. A router on channel 8, for example, will have a pretty good overlap with those on channel 6 and will still see interference. The only way to avoid this is moving all the way to 1 or 11. I left the 5Ghz channel selection on Auto for now, as the 5Ghz band is much less interference prone currently, and in fact I don’t believe there are any other 5Ghz networks in range in my neighborhood currently so it’s a non-issue there.

The second major problem I found with the router’s default setting was also in the router settings. The RT-N66U has the option to change the bandwidth for a given band. By default, I found that both the 2.4 and 5Ghz bands were set to a signal bandwidth of 20Hz. The reason this is a major issue is that at 20Hz, there is simply not enough throughput on the given band to allow for this router to hit its full speed potential. So I went ahead and set the router to use 40Hz bandwidth for each band.

With those two changes, my network performance and signal strength increased dramatically with real world results to prove it. Now, that dual-band network adapter in my office shows pegged at a solid 450Mbps (x2 for the dual bands for a theoretical 900Mbps hence the N900 designation on the router). Now that’s what I’d been expecting all along! As for the laptop in the other room, on single band 2.4Ghz it is now hitting a rock solid 300Mbps which is the max for that older draft-N card. This extra speed has even helped me attain the max internet speeds I can expect from my cable plan, I’m now seeing 30+Mbps download speeds and 20+Mbps uploads.

Now that it is properly configured, I have set it up to do all sorts of other fun stuff. I set up the VPN, with encryption, and can now connect to that with my Android phone and tablet when traveling which is a great feature for secure and private browsing when at airports, hotels, etc. I set up a separate “guest” SSID that is segregated from my internal network for my phones and to connect to since they are the only devices that regularly leave the security of the internal network. There are still 5 more guest SSID’s I can set up. Additionally, I connected a USB hard drive to it and it’s running as a local share folder as well as a DLNA and iTunes server. It’s doing all this with a desktop computer, two laptop computers, three Android phones, an Android tablet, a chromecast and a PS3 all connected to it and it’s not even breaking a sweat.

So that’s a lot of info, but I hope you can see that in the end with some know-how and research on the internet (like reading this review) this router can be just about the best thing you can do for your home or small business network at this price point. I would not hesitate to recommend it with the above provisos in mind.

NETGEAR Nighthawk AC1900 Dual Band WiFi Gigabit Router

Quadrupled my speed at home. There are 4 important points I’d like to make:

1) All these years I paid for a 50mbps speed from my cable company. I had an older Netgear from 2009 which has served me well all these years (and still works) but I decided it was time to upgrade. Typically I was getting only 12-17mbps through my wi-fi (for example, to my iPhone6). After getting this Nighthawk Router, I now get 57mbps on the same iPhone. All of my devices are much faster now… PS4, iPhones, iPads, Epson Printer, Baby Monitor, Tablets, Roku 3 box, Roku Streaming Stick, etc…

2) Cables …. Please note, one other thing I did in addition to getting this router is that I also bought all new cat6 cables (from Amazon Basics), and that has helped the router to connect well to the cable modem. From the router itself, I have a few wired items (Roku 3 box, PS4, my PC). And note that I tested the Roku 3 box, PS4, and PC wirelessly as well. In all conditions, wired with Cat6 cables and/or wi-fi, this Nighthawk router has delivered the speeds I was missing for years.

3) Interface…. Also, I like the interface for setting up and using the router. I like that you get two options of 2.4ghz or 5ghz connection. One thing to keep in mind is that some older devices can only use 2.4g so it is that old device itself that limits the connection speed (not your wi-fi necessarily). Newer devices are 5g capable and can maximize the speed capability.

4) Security… I also like the “Access Control” feature so that you have to permit a device to connect to your wi-fi. For example, when I got a new iPad this Christmas, I logged into my wi-fi network and put in the proper password, but it wouldn’t connect to the internet. Then I went to the Netgear interface on my PC and it displayed that the iPad had been blocked (because Access Control is turned on). So then I simply hit a check box to “allow” the iPad onto my home network, and then it connected.

Finally, I am not a tech person, I just try to read up on things to the best of my ability. I hope my review helps some of you.

Linksys AC1900 Dual Band Open Source WiFi Wireless Router

First i would like to start by saying i absolutely love this router. Its WIFI range is great, its dual band so i have choices and i can set up a guest network with the click of my mouse. It has a friendly User interface that allows everyday users to make changes as they see fit. It also allows for media prioritization by simply dragging your computer, or any device to the top of the list or to a separate list. This will ensure that no matter how many devices are connected your chosen device will always get what bandwidth it needs.

I purchased this WRT1900ACS router to replace old Linksys EA3500 router. EA3500 worked fine but I wanted better house coverage. WRT1900ACS did provide better signal but when I connected my work laptop to corporate VPN there was no internet connectivity. Could not reach any web site. Under same conditions everything was fine with EA3500. I contacted Linksys support chat and for an hour support person checked settings and tried to open ports. That did not solve the problem and my case was transferred to Linksys level 2 Escalation Engineer. I spoke about an hour with Linksys level 2 Escalation Engineer. He captured some logs from my PC, told that it’s probably a firmware issue and transferred the case to Sustaining Engineer from Belkin International. The job of Sustaining Engineer was to understand the problem and transfer it to R&D for bug correction. I spoke with Sustaining Engineer and exchanged numerous emails. He wanted me to capture logs with quite complicated setup and I agreed. But this setup required some inexpensive network hub (not switch) the I could not find or buy. Belkin did not want to send it to me. Then Belkin closed the case and sent me “Belkin Support Survey”. So Linksys knows that they have serious bug in WRT1900ACS firmware but are not willing to understand the nature of it and pass to R&D for solution. The only positive thing that I can say about Linksys/Belkin support is that they were polite.
This will be my last Linksys router. Need to find another brand. Not Belkin for sure.

TP-Link AC3200 Wireless Wi-Fi Tri-Band Gigabit Router

I’ve owned several TP-Link products this being one of the more anticipated products out there for me. Last year this was quite the new pricey router with very promising specifications. I grabbed it when it went on sale. Two day shipping was delayed because of Thanksgiving week (was expecting it Friday). Amazon delivered and got it to me on that Sunday.

Overall, decided to go with this as the two TP-Link Archer C9s (V1) I had were about done (routers typically last 4 to 5 years under constant use). I’ve tried this router at a cousin’s home who purchased a TP-Link router based on my recommendation. I purchased a
TP-Link AC2300 for a friend’s home (both my cousin and my friend have high-speed Comcast Internet). And my grandparents farm with DSL have the TP-Link N450 (TL-WR940N). All work without hiccup and needless to say I prefer their products (I’ve tried several companies and have had terrible experiences -except with TP-Link). I mean dropping WIFI, poor range and a total lack of features. This router sits as the most powerful and anything higher in performance costs $180 plus.

So you can imagine my surprise when this was DOA. It happens. What’s frustrating is all signals indicating it was working with the exception of the little globe light (i.e. meaning Internet connectivity). Different Ethernet cables. Several reboots and power on and offs. Nothing, I tried all the firmware available on TP-Link’s website and all logical configurations that would work with our network:

This router specifically as a V1.1 came with the V1_170707 firmware. Defaulting back to it, also did nothing.

So I’ve had to once again ask of Amazon to do the task of shipping me stuff on Thanksgiving week.

Apple AirPort Extreme Base Station

I purchased a new (latest gen) 2 TB Time Capsule and AirPort Extreme pair to replace my venerable but aging Apple AirPort network. The old network was asked to perform some impossible tasks — such as providing reliable wi-fi between the two separate buildings that make up my home, as well as to offer decent speed and reliable transmission to allow Skype, FaceTime, and GoToMeeting services to work well without jitter or frame loss. Generally, the equipment was able to deliver, but often I would get strange signal fade due to the saturation of wi-fi in my neighborhood. I had a total of six AirPort Extreme or AirPort Express nodes in the network, and I’d characterize availability at about 99%. Still, getting a strong and reliable signal to some of the outlying locations was challenging through so much drywall, siding, and distance. Thus, my decision to give the latest generation of these products a shot.

Long story made short: I’ve been using the new TimeCapsule and AirPort Extreme for a week now, and they have performed absolutely flawlessly. Based upon a quick test of the new nodes and their beam forming antennae arrays, I decided to take a chance and reduce my rather complex extended AirPort network from the previous six nodes down to a total of two latest-gen units (the two I am reviewing here) and one of the older AirPort Express units in my garage. I consistently get a transmit rate of 243 Mbps between the new nodes, and a solid 54 Mbps with the 802.11b node in the garage. Performance has been flawless, and I have had zero problems with connection drops, channel drift (as a result of spectrum congestion), or choppy performance. This, despite the location of the Time Capsule in a fully enclosed closet, and the distant (100 feet-plus) Airport Extreme in an office space surrounded on three sides by wall, siding, and filing cabinets.

As I intended to replace the previous Time Capsule, I decided to setup the entire new network from scratch. It went without a hitch, and I was able to completely modernize, implement the new network (with WPA2 security and a 5 GHz alternate service) in about 30 minutes. All computer nodes immediately recognized the new nodes and, aside from having to perform complete (but now very fast) Time Machine backups from all Mac nodes in the house, the wi-fi service has performed solidly and flawlessly.

Packaging for the new AirPorts was typical Apple; very well packaged in quality materials that I intend to keep so that I can reuse the packaging when it comes time to sell these units. The equipment was well wrapped in tack-back plastic wrap to protect the plastic components from scratches. The units themselves feel very substantial in the hand — again, typical Apple quality. And I didn’t need to consult any of the documentation even once during the setup. Again, typical Apple intuitive setup and configuration.

In conclusion, this has been an outstanding purchase and implementation; the products did exactly what I hoped they would do, and they have performed flawlessly to date. Five stars for the product. Five stars for typical Amazon fast, hassle-free delivery via my Prime membership.

D-Link AC3200 Ultra Tri-Band Wi-Fi Router With 6 High Performance Beamforming Antennas

Let me first start off by saying this review is not for the more tech savvy people out there, this is for those of you who think just by using this router it will magically boost your wifi speeds.

After reading many of the lower rated reviews I have come to the conclusion that most of those reviews are from people who do not understand wifi technology. You think because you purchased a high end router your internet speeds should automatically increase. That couldn’t be further from the truth. If you are still using wireless b or g devices, and oh boy do many people out there still have those ancient devices, then you will still get crap speeds over wifi. Even if your device is wireless n capable, if you are on the edge of your wifi network, your router might downgrade you to g or b speeds since you’re so far away and communication is so slow at that range.

If someone built a high powered router the size of a washing machine, and installed magical antennas that shot that wifi signal a mile down the road, GREAT! You can now connect to that routers wifi signal a mile away, but can YOUR device send a signal back to it at that range? Many people forget that wifi is a two-way communication, doesnt matter how strong your routers wifi signal is, if your device cant talk back to it, its useless!

Now think of a wireless b device as a pedestrian, a couple of wireless n devices as cars, and the router as the road. Now imagine that the n devices/cars are streaming/driving along a road just fine and all of a sudden that b device starts loading a webpage or even tries to stream a video…that pedestrian just walked onto the road and caused all the n devices/cars behind him to slow to his speed. THAT is the number 1 cause of wifi related slowdowns. Many popular devices operate on the wireless b protocol, Nintendo wii, some older Nintendo DS models, many older wireless printers, some older ipods.

Even your neighbors wifi with his wireless b devices can cause unwanted slowdowns and interference on your network, you need to get a good wifi analyzer and try to pick a good channel for your router to broadcast on. Even though many routers have a setting for AUTO CHANNEL selection, some routers only automatically find the best channel during initial boot up, and don’t actively auto search for the best channel as the wifi environment changes. Is the best wifi channel at 10am in the morning going to still be the best channel when all your neighbors and family come home from work and start using their devices at 6pm? Don’t think so. Also if you live in a large apartment complex, LOL @ wifi, just hardwire your equipment if you can. Dont complain to your ISP when your wifi environment is pure trash, because there is nothing they can do about it.

Before you look into upgrading your router, you first need to upgrade your equipment on your computers by replacing old legacy network cards with newer n or ac cards. If that is not an option there are USB adapters that can provide you with n or ac connections. Once you know your devices are capable of achieving your ISP delivered speeds, then you should look into upgrading your router. Of course there are some devices where there is just nothing you can do about its slow wifi adapter, that’s where the different bands come into play.

I have my printer, wireless security cams, and any other random older wifi capable device connected to my 2.4ghz band set to operate on g/n ONLY. I will NEVER expect good throughput on that network. Next I have my game consoles either hardwired or connected to my first 5ghz band operating on n/ac mode only. Then I have any other device that is AC capable connected to my second 5ghz band set to operate on AC ONLY. I have Time Warner Cable 300/20 internet. I get about 30-60 download speeds on my 2.4 network. Between 150-250 on my first 5ghz n/ac network. And a consistent 320+ on my second 5ghz AC only network. Oh and a constant 340+ hardwired =)

Also if your ISP only provides a maximum throughput of something like 20 or 30 or even 50 mbps…you DO NOT need a router like this, you would do fine with a basic N router for 30-40 bucks. This router however is freaking awesome and I am extremely happy with my purchase! What ISP’s need to do is educate their customers more on how wifi works and customers need to educate themselves on what their devices are capable of! I feel sorry for Google fiber! I can only imagine how many people ordering their gigabit service and are still using old legacy devices LOL…what a nightmare for Google. And shame on you people that are buying a router like this and still using 10/100 ethernet cards!

I uploaded 2 pictures to show my speedtests over wifi to give you examples of what you can expect once you configure your router properly. The slow test was on the 2.4 network about 30 ft away through 2 walls. The fast test was on the 5ghz ac only network standing in the same spot as the slow 2.4 test. Tested on my Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge. There are also some reviewers claiming this router is not compatible with Samsung products…all i can say is LOL….just another review from someone who shouldnt be buying these types of routers.

Amped Wireless ATHENA, High Power AC2600 Wi-Fi Router with MU-MIMO

I really wanted this router to be what the product description and accompanying graphics depicted, however I was a tad disappointed. First off let me list all the devices that I had connected to the router: my Xbox One, an iPhone 6, a Samsung Note 5, my LG Smart TV, my laptop, my PC workstation, and my printer. Only two connections were wired in, and those were my Xbox One and my PC. I don’t really have that many devices that I connect to the internet aside from the ones mentioned above (and only a couple are ever on and active at the same time) so I figure that overloading the router was definitely not an issue. I also do not have that many wireless networks around me so I don’t think that interference played a part in this either.

Moving on, speeds were pretty good over both the 2.4GHz and the 5GHz bands, range was a little lacking on both bands but I’ll touch on that later, I averaged about 148 Mbps Down and 18 Mbps Up on the 5Ghz band and 43 Mbps Down and 11 Mbps Up for the 2.4Ghz band which was way better than the new gateway that my ISP (Cox Cable) rolled out a couple months ago. Like I said earlier, range was pretty disappointing. Whereas my gateway had a strong connection (4 full bars) from two to three rooms away, my connection through the Amped Athena Router began dropping (2 bars) once I left the room and entered a room that was adjacent to the living room such as the kitchen. Both the router and the gateway were in the living room but in different areas (the gateway being near the wall connections, and the router on top of the entertainment center). I thought it was a bit strange at first, so I re-positioned the antennae and no dice. I then checked for some firmware updates but I was already on the latest version. Of course, when all else fails I decided power cycle the router and network setup. This did actually lead to a better performance increase (2-3 bars depending on where I stood), but it did not last as long as I’d like. Roughly three days later I was experiencing the same issues. Needless to say, I got pretty tired of having to power cycle the router and I did end up returning it.

Overall, I’d say this router would be better suited for someone in a smaller living space such as a dorm room, condo, or an apartment. I will say this though, I never had any issues with wired-in connections so I guess that’s a plus.

Google Wifi System

Bought a new home and setup internet service. Didn’t have a router so was looking to purchase one. Google WiFi works great. I have 100 Mbps service from my ISP. On WiFi using the 5 Ghz band, which Google WiFi chooses automatically (it chooses between 2.4 Ghz or 5 Ghz band, whichever signal is better, providing you have BOTH bands available), I get full speed (speedtest.net shows 110 Mbps down, 6 mbps up) as if I was on a wired connection. I was surprised, because I thought I would get around 60-70 Mbps, not the full speed offered. I thought I would have to get a crazy expensive gaming router with 20 antennas that looks like Sauron’s helmet from Lord of the Rings to get those speeds, but Google WiFi does that for $170 less and it has cool sci-fi-ish looks.

Tips and advice:
1. To get full WiFi speed, make sure your device (PC, laptop, tablet, phone, etc.) has both 2.4 Ghz and 5 Ghz bands. If you don’t you’ll be stuck at around 30 Mbps to 70 Mbps.
2. A SINGLE Google WiFi covers 1500 ft. Make sure you’re within that range, or get more to create a mesh network so you fall within WiFi range. My home was 1300 ft. so I only needed one.
3. The Google WiFi router only has two ethernet ports, one of which is used to connect to the modem. If you need more wired ports, buy an ethernet switch and connect the router to the switch.
4. When WiFi first connects, it will likely connect you to the 2.4 Ghz band. Don’t freak out. If you have a 5 Ghz band and the signal is good, it will connect you within 24 hours. It connected me to 2.4 Ghz band the first time I connected for a long while, but the next day when I started my PC again, it was now using the 5 Ghz band.
